Research Facilities

Major laboratory facilites for the CPSE are located in the Mountaintop Campus (Chemical Engineering Department and the Emulsion Polymers Institute), the Seeley G. Mudd Chemistry Building, Whitaker Laboratory (Materials Science and Engineering Department and the Center for Advanced Materials and Nanotechnology (CAMN). The instrumentation available to students and staff of the CPSE include X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, ESCA, scanning Auger electron spectroscopy, laser Raman spectroscopy, Mossbauer spectroscopy, nuclear magnetic resonance, NMR (three instruments: 90, 300, and 500 MHz), Fourier-transform infrared, FTIR (both convential and photoacoustic), gel permeation and gas chromatography units, electrophoretic mobility apparatus, Rheometrics RDA2 dynamic mechanical spectroscopy, Instron tenisle equipment, polymerization reactors, including bottle polymerizers, a Mettler RC-1 reaction calorimeter, and stirred-tank reactors with on-line sample analysis for residual monomers and interfaced with a computer for control operations. Two 1997 aquisitions include a modulated differential scanning calorimeter, DSC, and a Hi-Res thermogravimetric analyzer, TGA.
